Ever since its initial release in 2001,
the iPod has dominated the MP3 player market. Although other portable
media devices were available at the time, Apple’s simplistic design and
clever software revolutionized the way we listened to music on the go.
Today, the iPod is capable of so much more, from playing games and
browsing the internet to taking pictures and communicating with friends.
While it is difficult to look past the different iPod variations on the
market, including the Shuffle, Nano, Touch and Classic, there are still
numerous alternatives looking to compete with Apple’s dominance.
Before we go through the key features
and details of new MP3 players lets have a quick look at what Apple’s
iPod is currently offering us today.
Apple iPod touch
With the latest version of iOS 7 and numerous features that come as standard on the iPhone
5S, Apple’s iPod touch provides magnificent functionality at an
affordable price. With its curved edges, ultra-thin body and lightweight
construction, one could argue that it is even more aesthetically
pleasing than the top iPhone model. But despite this compact form, it
still features a 4-inch Retina display and a 5-megapixel iSight camera
capable of shooting 1080p HD video. It even comes with Apple’s Ear
Pods, which have been designed to deliver perfect sound and maximum
comfort.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2
If you’re not a fan of Apple or its
operating system, the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 featuring Android
GingerBread is a great alternative. With a fast 1GHZ processor, 4.2-inch
display and fully integrated services like Google Maps and YouTube,
the Galaxy Player 4.2 can match the iPod touch’s multitasking
capabilities. Even though this device also features an in-built radio
function, it is still playing catch-up to Apple’s premier MP3 player in
several departments.
SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip
For those interested in a stripped down budget MP3 player
without additional entertainment features, the SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip
might just be the device for you. With several audio formats supported
and access to music subscription services like Rhapsody and Napster,
this device has a few surprises up its sleeve. What’s more, it also
features a voice recorder and FM radio. However, its low price point is
reflected in the construction, as the Sansa Clip Zip does not feel like a
high-quality product.
What you want from your MP3 player will
determine your model of choice. If you’re just looking to listen to
music then maybe a simpler device is for you but if you want style and
heaps of functionality then Apple’s latest iPod may be more suitable for
you.
